Rikkoi Brathwaite delivered a podium finish for the British Virgin Islands on Thursday, securing bronze in the men’s 100 meters at the 5th North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Senior Championships.

Competing from lane seven, Brathwaite crossed the line in 10.15 seconds, aided by a slight tailwind (+0.4). He had advanced to the final with a time of 10.27.

Long jumper Chantel Malone came within centimeters of joining Brathwaite on the podium. Her leap of 6.60 meters (21 feet, 8 inches) left her just 0.04 shy of the bronze medal mark. In the throws, Djimon Gumbs turned in a strong showing, placing fifth in the shot put with 18.87 meters (61 feet, 11 inches) and sixth in the discus at 56.44 meters (185 feet, 2 inches).

On the track, hurdler Deya Erickson clocked 13.46 in the 110-meter hurdles but missed advancement, finishing ninth overall. Joshua Hill’s 47.76 in the 400 meters ranked 17th, while sprinter Beyoncé DeFreitas posted 11.44 in the women’s 100 meters, placing 11th.

The championships, held August 13–17, brought together top regional athletes. According to the BVI Athletics Association, the territory had initially planned to send 17 athletes, but collegiate schedules and seasonal considerations reduced the final team to seven.

Still, officials said the competition provided invaluable exposure. “The NACAC Championships is a great regional opportunity for athletes to get the exposure they need before taking the next steps,” said BVI Athletics Association President Steve Augustine, who expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to contend at the highest level.

The British Virgin Islands will be well represented on the global stage later this month as sprinters Beyoncé Defreitas and Rikkoi Brathwaite prepare to compete at the 2025 World Indoor Championships in Tokyo. The BVI Athletics Association officially announced their selection for the prestigious competition, set to take place from March 21 to 23 at the Nanjing Sports Training Center.

Brathwaite, a semi-finalist at last year’s Indoor World Athletics meet, will take to the track on March 21 for the 60m preliminaries at 9:10 a.m. local time. If he advances, he will return for the semifinals at 4:10 p.m. the same day. Defreitas will follow on March 22, with her 60m preliminaries scheduled for 7:15 a.m. and semifinals at 4:15 p.m.

The BVI is aiming to add to its medal count at the World Indoor Championships, with its sole podium finish coming in 2008 when Tahesia Harrigan-Scott secured bronze in the 60m sprint in Valencia, Spain. Now, Brathwaite and Defreitas look to make history once again for their nation.

Accompanying the athletes will be Ralston Henry, a World Athletics-certified senior coach, who will serve as both coach and team manager for the Championships.

The team is set to depart for Tokyo on March 13, ready to compete against the world’s best.

Rikkoi Brathwaite of the British Virgin Islands wrapped up his first Olympic appearance with a 10.15-second finish, placing 8th in Lane 2 of Heat 1 in the 100m semifinals on August 4 at the Stade de France in Paris.

Reflecting on his race, Brathwaite said, “Coming off the warm-up, everything was firing right. I was ready and went to the race. When the gun went, I think I got out first, and as the race progressed, I had a lot of cramps everywhere at that point but still pursued the race and finished with a 10.15. It isn’t how I wanted to end the season, but it is what it is.”

Brathwaite made history as the first male athlete from the British Virgin Islands to advance to the 100m semifinals at the Olympic Games. He secured his place by running a qualifying time of 10.13 seconds, which placed him third in Round 1 Heat 6.

As the Paris 2024 Olympic athletics Games commence, all eyes are on the Stade de France for the men’s 100-meter heats set to begin on Saturday morning. Among the star-studded lineup, one name stands out from the British Virgin Islands: Rikkoi Brathwaite. With a personal best of 10.03 seconds this year, Brathwaite aims to cement his place among the world’s fastest men.

Brathwaite’s journey to the Olympics has been one of  perseverance. Representing a small territory in the Caribbean, he has consistently proven himself on the track, earning his spot alongside the greatest 100m record holders. The question on everyone’s mind is whether Brathwaite will be the one to come from behind and make history.

The competition is fierce. Team USA’s superstar Noah Lyles, the reigning world champion, is expected to dominate the track. Lyles, 27, has already made a name for himself with gold medals in the 200-meter sprint and 4×100-meter relay at the 2019 World Championships, and a repeat victory in the 200 meters at the 2022 World Championships. Lyles’ performance at the 2023 World Championships, where he completed the sprint treble with victories in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 4×100-meter relay events, has established him as the man to beat.

Lyles’ ambition doesn’t stop there. In Paris, he aims for an unprecedented quadruple by adding the 4x400m relay to his list of events. Alongside Lyles, Fred Kerley, the world champion in 2022 and silver medallist in the Tokyo Games, is also in top form, making the American contingent a formidable force.

But the Americans are not the only ones vying for the title. Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson, a 22-year-old sensation, clocked the year’s best performance with a time of 9.77 seconds in June. His compatriot, Oblique Seville, has also proven his mettle by defeating Lyles earlier this year.

The competition extends beyond the Americas. Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, only 21, became the first African to medal in the 100 meters at last year’s World Championships in Budapest, where he took silver. Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala, the African record-holder with a time of 9.77 seconds, also poses a significant threat. Omanyala, licensed in Miramas, France, adds a local flavor to the international mix.

Italian sprinter Marcell Jacobs, the defending Olympic champion, is back in form after two injury-plagued seasons. Crowned European champion in June, Jacobs is determined to retain his title.

Despite the fierce competition, Brathwaite remains undeterred. As the heats progress, the world will watch closely to see if Brathwaite can defy the odds and emerge as a new force in the 100 meters.

In a race historically dominated by legends like Usain Bolt, the quest for the next undisputed king of the 100 meters continues. Will Rikkoi Brathwaite rise to the occasion and etch his name in Olympic history? Only time will tell as the athletes take their marks and the starter’s gun fires, signaling the start of a thrilling race to glory.

Rikkoi Brathwaite made headlines at the Holloway Pro Classic, setting a new national record for the British Virgin Islands (BVI) with an impressive time of 10.0 seconds in the semi-finals of the 100-meter dash.

Brathwaite’s performance not only established a new benchmark for BVI athletics but also earned him a spot among the top 56 male sprinters in the world, ranked at number 33. Only 26 other men globally have run faster times this year, highlighting Brathwaite’s exceptional speed and competitive edge.

The semi-final race was won by Emmanuel Matadi of the United States, the Liberian national record holder, with a time of 9.98 seconds. Brathwaite secured second place, while Joseph Fahnbulleh of the United States took third.

In the finals, Brathwaite finished seventh with a time of 10.20 seconds in what was his final tune-up race before the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he will make his debut as a member of the BVI team. Emmanuel Matadi clinched victory in the finals with a blistering 9.91 seconds, followed by Joseph Fahnbulleh with 10.00 seconds and Pjai Austin of the USA with 10.06 seconds.
