The National Bank of the Virgin Islands (NBVI) has announced an early closure on Friday, August 9, at 2 p.m. to allow team members to attend the official watch party for the highly anticipated 400m hurdles finals, where Kyron McMaster, OBE, will be competing as an Olympic finalist.

In a statement released earlier today, the bank expressed its commitment to supporting McMaster, who has captured the hearts of many in the British Virgin Islands with his remarkable Olympic journey. The NBVI team will resume regular hours on Monday, August 12, and they apologise for any inconvenience this early closure may cause.

The Social Security Board and National Health Insurance have also joined in this effort, announcing their offices will close at 2:30 p.m. on the same day. “We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused,” the Board stated, emphasising their pride in McMaster and all athletes representing the British Virgin Islands at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The watch party, organised by the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the BVI Athletics Association, will commence at 3:00 p.m. at Rena’s Festival Village.

McMaster finished first in heat 2 of the 400m hurdles on August 2, with a time of 48.15 seconds. His victory not only secured his spot in the finals but also set the stage for a thrilling contest against elite competitors, including Norway’s Karsten Warholm and France’s Clément Ducos. Warholm dominated heat 1 with a remarkable time of 47.67 seconds, while Ducos followed closely at 47.85 seconds.

Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo won gold in the men’s 200 meters final on Thursday, August 8, finishing with a time of 19.46 seconds, the fourth-fastest in Olympic history.

Tebogo’s victory overshadowed the struggles of American star Noah Lyles, who crossed the line in third after revealing he was battling COVID-19. Following the race, Lyles was assisted off the track in a wheelchair.

Lyles’ finish for the second consecutive Olympics left fans and competitors in shock. Despite his health struggles, Lyles managed to finish in 19.70 seconds, falling to his back in pain as he grappled with the effects of the virus that had impacted him throughout his Olympic journey.

As Lyles dealt with his medical issues, Kenny Bednarek secured silver with a time of 19.62 seconds.

Lyles’ condition became evident a night earlier when he finished second in a semifinal and headed to the medical tent without speaking to the press. Despite reassurances from his coach that he was fine, it was clear something was wrong as the final unfolded.

As the runners approached the homestretch, Lyles fell behind, unable to summon his finishing kick. What was once a reliable surge in the final stretch transformed into a push for the line, culminating in a collapse onto the purple track, marking a conclusion to his Olympic journey.

The Jamaican track and field community is grappling with the news that sprinting legends Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson will not participate in the 4x100m relay heats at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Shericka Jackson has been contending with an injury sustained during a competition in Hungary last month. Despite intensive rehabilitation efforts, it became evident that competing could exacerbate the injury.

Bruce James, president of MVP Track Club, provided insight into the decision. “Her participation in the relays was always in doubt. The best decision for Jamaica is to keep her out; the last thing we need is Shericka running the anchor leg and not being able to finish,” James told TVJ, as reported by the Jamaican Gleaner.

Jackson had already pulled out of the 100m and 200m events, making her withdrawal from the relays a tough but necessary choice. “During the 200m heats, she felt increased pain with every sprint. Prioritising her health is crucial,” added James.

Simultaneously, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, another cornerstone of Jamaican sprinting, confirmed she would not be competing in the relay heats. Ian Kelly, Chef de Mission for Jamaica’s Olympic team, discussed the adjustments being made.

“With Shelly-Ann and Shericka out, we’ve brought in Kemba [Nelson] and have other capable athletes ready to step in,” Kelly noted. He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to perform despite the absence of the two stars. “We are committed to ensuring that the experience and strength these athletes bring to the team are well represented.”

Jamaica now faces the challenge of moving forward without two of its most celebrated sprinters, but the team remains optimistic about their chances in the relay events.

Noah Lyles edged out Jamaican sprinter Kishane Thompson to capture his first Olympic gold medal in the men’s 100-meter race with a lifetime best of 9.784 seconds.

Thompson finished just five thousandths of a second behind at 9.789 seconds. The official results were not immediately clear, leaving both athletes in suspense for nearly a minute until the photo finish was confirmed.

When the results were finally displayed on the Stade de France videoboard, Lyles was declared the gold medalist. Thompson secured the silver, while American Fred Kerley earned the bronze, marking his second Olympic medal in the 100m.

Lyles’ victory makes him the first American man to win gold in the 100m since Justin Gatlin at the 2004 Athens Games. After a disappointing seventh-place finish at the U.S. Trials in 2021, Lyles has now established himself as the world’s top 100m runner for the second consecutive year.
