Elroy A. Turnbull Dies at 73: A Legacy of Education, Service and Community Leadership

The Turnbull family has announced the passing of Elroy A. Turnbull on August 22 at the age of 73.

Known for his extraordinary character, Turnbull was widely admired for his love, jovial spirit and generosity, which left a lasting impact on countless lives in the British Virgin Islands and beyond.

He was a trailblazer in education and a pioneer among his peers. He was the only male in the first cohort of four BVIslanders sent to the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Barbados by the former Chief Minister, H. Lavity Stoutt. Among his fellow students was Deputy Premier Lorna Smith. This educational journey marked the beginning of Turnbull’s lifelong commitment to empowering others through learning.

Turnbull dedicated his career to teaching mathematics and science at the BVI High School, where he inspired generations of students with his passion for education. His leadership and vision led him to serve as Chief Education Officer, where he championed educational advancement throughout the territory. Later, Turnbull continued his service to the community as the Permanent Secretary in the Premier’s Office during the tenure of Dr. D. Orlando Smith as Premier, playing a key role in shaping public policy.

In addition to his contributions to education and government, Turnbull was deeply involved in sports, serving as the first Public Relations Officer for the BVI Basketball Federation. His work in this role helped promote the sport and engage the community, furthering his impact on the lives of many in the territory.

Elroy A. Turnbull’s legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those he educated, mentored and loved.
