Mr. Julian Willock has issued a formal response to a recent article published by Ms. Cindy Rosan in Guavaberry Media on October 23, 2024. The article, titled “Lorna Smith Sacrificed for Julian Willock Run in 2027,” contains allegations suggesting that Premier Hon. Natalio D. Wheatley’s dismissal of Hon. Lorna G. Smith OBE was part of a strategy to advance Mr. Willock’s political ambitions. Mr. Willock strongly refutes these claims, describing them as false and without basis.

In his statement, Mr. Willock clarified that he had no involvement in, nor prior knowledge of, the Premier’s decision to dismiss Hon. Lorna G. Smith OBE. He emphasised his friendship with Mrs. Smith and pointed out that, as a member of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) and its Third District Committee, he was not consulted or informed about the Premier’s actions.

“To suggest that this was done as a political favor or in support of my alleged candidacy is completely baseless,” Mr. Willock stated. “I have had no discussions with Premier Wheatley, Hon. Julian Fraser, or any of their associates regarding any such matter.”

Mr. Willock urged Ms. Rosan to adhere to responsible journalism by ensuring her publications are grounded in fact rather than speculation. He condemned the report as both defamatory and misleading, asserting that he has made efforts to avoid becoming entangled in what he described as Ms. Rosan’s “vicious attacks” against other Virgin Islanders.

In a final note, Mr. Willock issued a measured warning: “Karma is real. When digging a hole for others, be sure to dig two.”

He also reminded the public of District Three’s upcoming annual Job Fair, scheduled for Sunday, October 27, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Therapy Works in Hannah’s Bay, Tortola.

Former Speaker of the House of Assembly and District 3 resident Julian Willock, along with his Third District Committee, has launched a new twist on their annual Back-to-School event, titled “3 Hours, 3 Schools, District 3.”

This year, the event will focus on three schools in the Sea Cows Bay area: Seventh-day Adventist School, St. George’s Anglican School, and Ebenezer Thomas Primary School. Over 100 bags filled with books and other essential supplies will be donated directly to these schools, with principals and teachers determining which students need them most over the 2024-2025 school year.

Explaining the new approach, Willock said, “We noticed that many existing back-to-school events had restrictions, like requiring students to come from a particular district or pre-register. Our approach is simpler: we want to help students who genuinely need it, and who better to identify those students than the teachers and principals who interact with them daily?”

The only requirement for receiving supplies is that the students must be enrolled in one of the three selected schools. Donations are set to be made next week, all within a single day, in what Willock has dubbed the “3 Hours, 3 Schools in District 3” initiative.

Willock also highlighted plans for a separate, special initiative for the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre, which is temporarily housed in the Sea Cows Bay area.

He expressed gratitude to the sponsors who helped make this year’s event possible, including Nanny Cay Resort, BDO Limited, Northam Construction, IAM Jet Centre, his Third District Committee, and Kishma P. Forbes of Virgin Islands School and Office Supplies.

More than 100 bags filled with books, pencils, and other school supplies.

Bayside Blazers is preparing to represent the British Virgin Islands (BVI) alongside Skillful Ballers in the annual Dreams to Reality Foundation ‘Battle of the Fittest’ (BOTF) Basketball Tournament. Scheduled for July 14-20, 2024, the tournament will showcase nightly action at the LB Scott Sports Auditorium in Philipsburg, Dutch St. Maarten.

Manager Julian Willock expressed anticipation for the upcoming competition, highlighting the team’s proactive stance during the absence of local league play. “While awaiting the BVI Basketball Federation to initiate local leagues such as the Hon Fraser Save the Seed League, our players have remained active, preparing us well for international competition,” Willock explained.

Willock underscored the tournament’s significance in promoting the sport and nurturing player development. He credited initiatives like the Virgin Gorda Basketball League and the efforts of individuals such as Steve E. Parillon and Eustace C. Freeman for sustaining basketball interest and competitiveness across the Virgin Islands.

The final roster for the Bayside Blazers is yet to be confirmed, with Willock expecting announcements in the coming days, including the inclusion of overseas players. Local talents expected to shine for the Virgin Gorda-based team include Kimani T. Stevens, Shamarr A. George, Norville S. Carey, and Dione M. Blyden. Coaching duties for the VG Bayside Blazers will be overseen by Brian S. Brewley, known as ‘Bash’, with Trevor M. Stevens, also known as ‘West’, serving as the team trainer.

While sponsorship from Biras Creek Resort and Skelton Group of Companies has been secured, Willock continues efforts to secure additional funding to ensure the team’s optimal preparation and participation in the tournament.

With the Virgin Islands fielding two teams in the BOTF Basketball Tournament, the Bayside Blazers are poised to represent Virgin Gorda with determination and skill, aiming to make their mark on the regional stage.

Former House of Assembly Speaker Julian Willock has been arrested on charges related to document forgery and infractions involving visa waivers allegedly committed between 2018 and 2022.

He is currently out on $50,000 bail and is set to appear in the Magistrate’s Court on September 12.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) confirmed in a statement on June 4 that the 56-year-old resident of Sea Cow’s Bay, Tortola, has been charged with several offences.

These include “one count of a Public Official Using his Office for Gratification, contrary to section 83 of the 2013 Criminal Code, one count of Conspiracy to Provide False Information to a Person Employed in a Public Service, contrary to sections 124 and 346 of the 2013 Criminal Code, and one count of Conspiracy to Uttering a Forged Document, contrary to sections 257 and 346 of the 2013 Criminal Code.”

According to the police statement, an 18-month investigation led by the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) Police Investigation Team focused on visa waivers issued between 2018 and 2022, as well as a forged document allegedly presented to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) Immigration Department in 2022.

The 2021 Commission of Inquiry, conducted by Sir Gary Hickinbottom , highlighted systemic issues, stating that “Almost everywhere, the principles of good governance, such as openness, transparency and even the rule of law, are ignored. In many important areas of government – including the procurement of contracts, grants of assistance, appointments to statutory boards, the disposal of Crown Land and the grant of residence and belonger status – discretionary decisions are made by elected officials (usually, Ministers) on the basis of no criteria, or patently inadequate and/or unpublished criteria, or criteria which are as often as not simply ignored.
