A son of the Virgin Islands who has been steadily carving out his place in international theatre is now taking another major step forward, as Sheldon Frett joins a high-profile stage production in Los Angeles.

Frett, a native of Tortola, has joined the cast of “Master Harold”…and the Boys, currently being staged at the Geffen Playhouse from April 8 to May 10, 2026. The production is co-directed by Tony Award–nominated director Emily Mann and Academy Award winner Tarell Alvin McCraney.

Frett appears as understudy for the role of Willie, bringing years of training and performance experience to the production. His inclusion reflects a career that has been steadily gaining momentum across both theatre and screen.

A graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Frett has appeared in classical productions such as Pericles, Henry VI, and Titus Andronicus. His screen work includes Get On Up, where he performed alongside Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman, as well as roles in the television series Hitmen and Shots Fired.

Despite his growing international profile, Frett says he remains committed to representing the Virgin Islands.

“Being part of this production under the direction of Tarell Alvin McCraney is an incredible opportunity to grow as an artist. I am also proud to continue highlighting the British Virgin Islands on an international stage, showing the world the talent and stories that come from our home.”

The production, written by acclaimed playwright Athol Fugard, explores themes of race, power, and friendship in apartheid-era South Africa.

Frett’s latest achievement reflects not only his personal dedication to the craft, but also the continued rise of Virgin Islands talent on the global stage.

The Virgin Islands Festivals and Fairs Committee (VIFFC) said a technical issue with Eventbrite led to the incorrect issuance of season passes for the Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival, prompting immediate refunds and a rescheduling of sales.

In a public notice, the committee said the issue affected purchasers attempting to secure passes and acknowledged the disruption caused.

“The Virgin Islands Festivals and Fairs Committee (VIFFC) extends its sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused by a technical issue with Eventbrite, which resulted in season passes for the Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival being issued incorrectly,” the statement said.

The committee said full refunds are being issued to all affected purchasers and that it is working with Eventbrite to restore correct processing of season passes.

Tier 1 (Early Bird) season pass sales, originally scheduled earlier, will now resume on April 18, 2026. The committee said pricing for Tier 1 will remain at $150, excluding Eventbrite fees, while dates and pricing for additional tiers will be announced later.

As part of the response, the committee said each season pass purchaser will receive a branded “Freedom Tumbler,” sponsored by the BVI Tourist Board and Film Commission.

The committee said refunds will be processed automatically but advised that it may take several business days for financial institutions to reflect the credit.

It also said further updates will be provided once confirmation is received from Eventbrite that the issue has been resolved.

The Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival is one of the territory’s largest annual cultural events, drawing residents and visitors to a series of activities marking emancipation.

Bishop John I. Cline, interim president of the National Democratic Party (NDP), said Hon. Stacy Mather and Hon. Lorna Smith have not engaged in any discussions, to his knowledge, about joining the party, despite ongoing political realignments ahead of the next general election.

Speaking during an interview with Cathy Richards of JTV, Bishop Cline said neither he nor the party’s leadership has held conversations with the two legislators regarding potential affiliation with the NDP.

“None to my knowledge,” Bishop Cline said when asked whether discussions had taken place. “Not from me, not from the president. I have not engaged in conversation.”

Hon. Mather, who entered the House of Assembly following the 2023 general election, currently sits on the government side, while Hon. Smith, who ran with the NDP in 2023, has maintained an independent political stance. Bishop Cline said both individuals have made their respective decisions regarding political alignment.

“I think they made their decision, and we honor their decision,” he said.

The comments come as the NDP undergoes a process of internal consolidation, including the return of former members and the dissolution of the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM). Bishop Cline said his efforts have focused on organizational reunification rather than recruiting individual politicians.

“I was focused on organizational reunification, not so much individuals,” he said, referring to efforts to bring together factions such as PVIM and the Alliance under the NDP.

While ruling out current engagement, Bishop Cline did not dismiss the possibility of future political shifts.

“I have learned in this political landscape that you can’t say never,” he said, noting that political alliances can change in the period leading up to an election.

He added that discussions about potential candidates and party alignment remain fluid and could evolve as the election cycle progresses.

The NDP is preparing for a convention scheduled for April 18, where party leadership positions will be decided, as part of its broader effort to strengthen its organizational structure ahead of the next general election.

It’s already Saturday, and the energy is high as the BOB Weekend in the Virgin Islands is officially in full swing!

Friday night set the tone with a vibrant start, beginning with a press conference at Village Cay, followed by a lively Mardi Gras Welcome Party at Touchdown. Patrons were treated to performances by Your Favorite Band, Syndicate Sounds out of St. Thomas, The Association, and DJ Dagga — a strong kickoff that had the crowd moving from start to finish.

Now, all eyes turn to tonight!

Saturday brings the highly anticipated **Black on Black: Old School meets New School** at the Multipurpose Sports Complex from 9 PM until. This event promises a musical clash of generations, featuring Old School heavyweights like DJ Dre, Selecta Taz, Ce’cile, and Demarco, going head-to-head with New School acts Topman Kee, Nixx in the Mixx, Nigy Boy, and Valiant.

With major support from the Government of the Virgin Islands, the BVI Tourist Board, Village Cay Hotel & Marina, and Caribbean Cellars, tonight is expected to be one of the biggest highlights of the weekend. Tickets are still available at select locations across Tortola, Virgin Gorda, St. Thomas, and online via Eventbrite.

And the vibes don’t stop there!

Sunday wraps things up with a full day of excitement, starting with the **Black Jack & Black Bikini Fun Run** at Village Cay, with registration opening at 10 AM.

Then it’s time to hit the water with the Boat Ride aboard the C Breeze, departing at noon. With music by DJ Malie and The Association, patrons will make stops at Ocean’s 7, Foxy’s Taboo, and Loose Mongoose — each featuring live entertainment along the way.

The weekend closes out back at Village Cay with a high-energy Pool Party from 4 PM, featuring a star-studded lineup including Selecta Taz, Topman Kee, Moyo, Gangsta Munch, Luh Jefe, Syndicate Sounds, Banco, Grand Masters Band, and Timo from R. City.

And for those feeling lucky, the $100 Black Jack Hand gives you a shot at winning the cash pot, with a tie-breaker game if needed.

BOB Weekend is delivering non-stop vibes, music, and entertainment — and if you haven’t joined yet, there’s still time to be part of the experience.

Virgin Islands recording artist Killa Tooma released his third studio album, Voice of the Lamb, on Aug. 15, making the 11-track project available on all major streaming platforms.

The album departs from his earlier work in process and theme. In a statement, Killa Tooma said he did not write lyrics for the record but instead relied on what he described as a spiritual experience. He said he viewed the project as God speaking through him to deliver a message of faith, resilience, and self-improvement.

The tracks highlight personal growth and perseverance, with one song, Vigilate, addressing the political climate in the Virgin Islands while calling for accountability from leaders. The album also incorporates a spoken contribution from Elmore Stoutt and a sample from the late Michael “Pup-D” Stevens.

In a Facebook post announcing the release, Killa Tooma said he hoped the project would resonate with listeners: “From my heart to yours, I pray it has the same effect on you.”

Killa Tooma, who has previously released two studio albums, is known in the Virgin Islands for lyrics that draw on faith and personal experience.

The British Virgin Islands will transform into a vibrant playground of fashion and culture as Summer Sizzle BVI celebrates its 15th anniversary with four days of high style and island flair.

From July 24 to 27, designers, models, celebrities, and style enthusiasts from across the globe will converge in Tortola for what has become the region’s most anticipated fashion affair. More than just a runway show, Summer Sizzle is a dynamic fusion of art, heritage, and luxury—set against the postcard-perfect backdrop of one of the world’s most stunning destinations.

Now a staple on the international fashion calendar, this year’s event promises to be its most extravagant yet, bringing global talent and local pride together in a dazzling celebration of creativity and Caribbean elegance.

This year’s Global Glamour Runway Show, the centerpiece of the event, draws inspiration from the Met Gala’s “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” theme—highlighting excellence in tailoring, bold design, and cultural authenticity. The runway will serve as a canvas for designers whose work reflects both innovation and identity.

Bringing personality and prestige to the stage are this year’s co-hosts, Neil Dawson and Lana Rae.

Dawson, a Tortola native, has appeared in Law & Order, FBI, and Godfather of Harlem, and brings both Hollywood charm and hometown pride to the event. He is also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Lana Rae is a veteran stylist and producer whose résumé includes over 300 television appearances, as well as creative direction for events like the Baltimore MET Gala and Global Couture DC. She currently serves as Chief of Fashion for the Preakness Stakes and has styled major campaigns for British Vogue, BET, MTV, and Usher’s 2023 Numero Netherlands cover.

The festival also makes space for emerging talent. The Summer Sizzle BVI Kids Show returns this year, styled by celebrity stylist Khaliah Clark. Known for her work with major brands and television productions, Clark lends her expertise to a runway segment that is playful, spirited, and filled with promise. For many of the young participants, it marks their first step into the world of fashion.

Featured menswear designers include:

  • Brandon Gray (Los Angeles, CA) – Known for dressing stars at the Met Gala, Gray brings sharp silhouettes and Hollywood polish

  • Chuk Collins (Nigeria/UK) – Celebrated for his avant-garde approach and boundary-pushing designs

  • Stanlion Clothing (Cameroon) – Offering a regal, structured take on modern menswear

  • Andrew Nowell (Washington, DC) – Known for clean tailoring with nods to African American tradition

They’ll be joined by an impressive lineup of international designers, including:

  • David Rolle (Bahamas), Jaer Caban and David Antonio (Puerto Rico) – Caribbean excellence at its finest

  • Andrea Wilson, founder of the Islander Swim & Resort Collection, representing the Virgin Islands and Guyana, adds local flair to the lineup

Summer Sizzle BVI is more than just fashion—it’s a full-sensory cultural experience. This year’s program blends style with adventure, cuisine, music, and local tradition.

Rising music star Monéa has just hit another major milestone—she’s been nominated for a Caribbean Music Award, officially placing her among the top breakout dancehall artists of the year. She joins a talented lineup of emerging acts, including Armanii, Malie Donn, and Lady Lava, further proving that her influence on the Caribbean music scene is only growing.

Monéa is up for Caribbean R&B Artist of the Year, competing against a strong roster of regional talent, including Barbados’ Amanda Reifer and Jamaican stars Tosh Alexander, D’yani, and Dexta Daps—whom she’s previously collaborated with. Her signature sound, which she calls “Tropikana”—a fusion of dancehall and pop—has been turning heads internationally, solidifying her status as a genre-bending force in the industry.

The Caribbean Music Awards, now in its third year, will take place over Labor Day weekend in New York. Hosted by the Caribbean Elite Group, the event honors artists, producers, and industry professionals across multiple Caribbean genres. This year’s awards feature over 150 nominees across 40+ categories, including standout artists from the U.S. Virgin Islands like Pressure, Pumpa, Th3rd, Star Martin, and Kruziano.

Fans can support Monéa by casting their votes on the Caribbean Music Awards website, with voting open until Friday, May 1.

This nomination is historic—not only for Monéa but for her home, the British Virgin Islands. She’s officially the first artist from the BVI to ever receive a nod from the Caribbean Music Awards. The recognition couldn’t come at a better time, as she gears up to drop her highly anticipated sophomore album, Tropikana Vol. 2: Mood Swings, later this summer.

“Being nominated is an incredible honor,” Monéa said. “To be recognized among such talented artists is humbling, and I’m grateful for the support of my fans and my home in the BVI.”
