One of our own is making international waves! Donelle “Phyzic” Smith, a proud son of the Virgin Islands, was featured today, September 3, 2025, in the California Gazette for his outstanding work and inspiring journey in the music industry. The Grammy Award-winning engineer is gaining recognition not only for his technical skills but also for the unique energy and supportive atmosphere he brings into the recording studio.

Originally from the BVI, Phyzic moved to California with a dream and unshakable determination. Like many great success stories, his path was not without challenges. He began his career as an intern at Neighborhoodwatche Studios and endured periods of homelessness while trying to make a name for himself in a competitive industry. But rather than deter him, those early struggles ignited a fire that continues to drive him today.

“I hit rock bottom, and that’s what lit the spark in me,” Phyzic shared. “Returning home wasn’t an option—I had to make it work.”

And make it work he did. Today, Phyzic is known for working with top-tier artists including Soulja Boy and Polo G. He’s contributed to chart-topping tracks, including those featured on the Barbie movie soundtrack, which soared on the Billboard charts. Yet, despite his growing success, Phyzic remains deeply connected to his roots and passionate about uplifting others.

In the California Gazette feature, Phyzic spoke about the importance of creating a positive studio atmosphere. He believes that the energy in the room can make or break a session. By creating a relaxed and supportive environment, he empowers artists to feel comfortable, confident, and creatively free.

“When an artist walks in, they might not be ready to work immediately. Sometimes, they just need a moment to relax,” he explained. His thoughtful and intuitive approach is what sets him apart in a competitive industry.

But beyond the studio and stage lights, Phyzic carries a message for the next generation—especially those from small islands like the BVI. He encourages aspiring creatives to stay focused, put in the work, and trust their journey.

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take,” he reminds others, urging them to embrace their individuality and seize opportunities.

As Phyzic continues to work on major projects and eye new goals—including touring as an on-the-road engineer—he remains a beacon of inspiration for the BVI community and beyond. His story is one of perseverance, passion, and pride.

Donelle Smith Makes British Virgin Islands Proud with Historic Grammy Win

Donelle Smith, hailing from the British Virgin Islands, has emerged as the first Grammy Award winner from the territory.

Smith, celebrated for his role as one of the engineers behind the acclaimed Barbie movie soundtrack, secured the coveted title of Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media for the Barbie Album at the 66th annual Grammy Awards.

Speaking exclusively with Jahphix Television after the announcement, the 29-year-old Grammy winner shared, “Honestly, I haven’t fully grasped the reality of it yet; it’s still fresh, but I’m grateful for this moment in my life. Knowing how hard I’ve worked for this and seeing everything come together is simply amazing. A quote I would give is, Dreams manifest when you want them to.”

Donelle Smith’s journey into the realm of audio engineering commenced in 2015 during his college years. However, it wasn’t until 2018, when he immersed himself as an intern at Neighborhoodwatche Studios, that he truly grasped the intricacies of the music industry. Within those hallowed studio walls, Smith not only honed his technical skills but also acquired the art of studio etiquette, client interaction, and handling the diverse challenges that come with the profession.

Smith’s involvement in the Barbie project was serendipitous, stemming from a studio session with Trinidad James, a major player in the music industry. Trinidad James, alongside collaborators Young Fyre and Kaine, opened the door to a project that would go on to make musical history.

Recalling the genesis of the Barbie collaboration, Smith explained, “The label was finishing up the soundtrack for the Barbie movie, so Kaliii was actually coming to the studio that night to record her verse for the song. She was coming to work on another song too, so you could say it was like a perfect timing kind of situation.”

Working on the Barbie movie soundtrack was not merely a professional milestone for Donelle; it was a surreal experience that unfolded like a cinematic plot twist. “If I’m being very honest, I didn’t even know a Barbie movie was being made at all until Kaine had brought it to our attention in the session,” confessed Smith. The realisation of contributing to such an iconic brand left an indelible mark on him.
