The conference, which officially commenced on September 4, features a series of presentations and discussions on key topics such as sustainability, technology and innovation, aviation and connectivity, cruise tourism, leadership and legacy, and business continuity planning. McCoy presented on the topic of Business Continuity Planning, sharing insights from the British Virgin Islands’ experiences, following his participation in the CTO business sessions earlier in the week.

The BVI delegation includes Natalie Penn-Lake, Standards & Training Manager at the BVI Tourist Board and Film Commission (BVITBFC); Calvin Smith, Product Officer for Transportation at BVITBFC; Naomi Onwufuju, the 2023 winner of the Tourism Youth Congress; Adrianne Thomas, BVI’s representative at the CTO Tourism Youth Congress; and Lucena Weekes, an English teacher from Elmore Stoutt High School.

“The business meetings were very productive and informative,” McCoy noted. “I was pleased to share my knowledge on how our experiences in the Territory have shaped our business continuity planning. I am also looking forward to seeing our Junior Ambassador of Tourism, Ms. Adrianne Thomas, represent us at the highly anticipated CTO Tourism Youth Congress.”

The highlight of the week will be the CTO Tourism Youth Congress, scheduled for Thursday, September 5, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Adrianne Thomas, a student from Elmore Stoutt High School, will compete to become the top regional presenter, following in the footsteps of previous BVI representatives.

The week’s activities will conclude with a closing ceremony on Thursday evening, followed by a wrap-up press conference on Friday morning, September 6. The BVI delegation’s participation underscores the territory’s commitment to fostering tourism growth and innovation in the region.

Caribbean Airlines is expanding its footprint in the Caribbean with the launch of a new route to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), set to begin on 14 October 2024.

This move is part of the airline’s strategic plan to enhance regional connectivity and strengthen its position as a leading carrier in the Caribbean.

The new service will operate four times a week, departing from the airline’s hub in Trinidad. This route will provide passengers with convenient connections to key destinations across the region, including Antigua, Barbados, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Garvin Medera, CEO of Caribbean Airlines, expressed his excitement about the new route, emphasising the airline’s commitment to connecting the Caribbean. “Regional connectivity is at the heart of Caribbean Airlines’ mission. Our new service to Tortola is a significant step in our growth strategy, and we are committed to providing seamless travel experiences for our passengers,” Medera said. “By the end of this year, Caribbean Airlines will link the Spanish, French, Dutch, and English-speaking Caribbean with each other, as well as with the North American Diaspora, and business and leisure travellers who wish to explore our vibrant region.”

The BVI delegation, comprising key members of the British Virgin Islands Tourist Board & Film Commission (BVITBFC), the British Virgin Islands Yachting, Hotel & Tourism Association (BVIYHTA), and other prominent tourism industry partners, engaged in fruitful discussions and networking activities throughout the event.

The BVI contingent included Clive McCoy, Director of Tourism; Shonda Maduro, Business Development Manager (Northeast); Keith Dawson, Public Relations Manager from BVITBFC; Sally-Ann Riley, Secretary of BVIYHTA; Nancy Williams, Director of Sales, Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina; and Marike Friends-Fifield, Director of Sales, Peter Island Resort. This dedicated team met with over 100 delegates, delivering presentations on the BVI as a premier destination, and provided updates to both new and existing buyers, as well as the media, on the latest tourism developments in the Territory.

The CHTA Marketplace, renowned as the Caribbean’s premier tourism marketing event, attracted over 1,200 delegates from 50 countries, facilitating 1,274 appointments between buyers and suppliers. Participants included tourist boards, hotels, airlines, tour operators, travel wholesalers, travel consortia, hotel and tourism associations, property management companies, and media. This year saw notable participation from non-traditional markets such as Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Asia, alongside the traditional markets.
