Kyron McMaster, Chantel Malone, Rikkoi Brathwaite, Beyoncé Defreitas, Jaleel Croal and Djimon Gumbs earned their places at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo through the World Athletics ranking system, which determines entry based on points accumulated at international meets.

The six athletes, who will compete from Sept. 13-21, make up the largest delegation in the territory’s history at the championships.

The BVI Athletics Association confirmed on Aug. 27 that McMaster, Malone, Brathwaite and Croal had qualified. Three days later, officials announced that Gumbs and Defreitas were added to the roster as “next best” athletes, completing the six-member team.

According to World Athletics, McMaster enters the competition ranked 11th in the 400 meters with 1,333 points. Malone is ranked 32nd in the long jump, Brathwaite 48th in the 100 meters, Croal 61st in the 200 meters, Defreitas 63rd in the 200 meters, and Gumbs 50th in the shot put.

The athletes arrived in Tokyo earlier this month with coach and team liaison Ralston Henry, BVIAA President Steve Augustine, BVIAA General Secretary Stephanie Russ Penn, and physiotherapist Colin Turner.

Competition for Team BVI begins Sept. 13 with Brathwaite in the 100 meters and Gumbs in the shot put. Malone is scheduled to compete in the long jump on Sept. 14, McMaster in the 400 meters on Sept. 16, and Croal and Defreitas in the 200 meters on Sept. 18.

The championships will be broadcast on SportsMax, NBC Sports, Peacock, and worldathletics.org.

The British Virgin Islands Football Association announced that Assistant Referee Kenesha Chesney will make her regional debut at the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Girls U14 Challenge Series in Trinidad from Aug. 15 to 24.

Chesney, who began her involvement in football by watching local matches, chose officiating over playing. “I’ve always wanted to be part of the game, and refereeing gave me that opportunity,” she said. “It’s about focus, fitness, and making quick decisions under pressure — and I love the challenge.”

Since starting her refereeing career, Chesney has worked to master the Laws of the Game, improve her fitness, and develop the mental resilience required at higher levels. The BVIFA said her dedication has been supported by mentors and fellow referees.

Her selection marks a milestone for women’s officiating in the BVI. “Being chosen for this tournament is an honour,” Chesney said. “It’s a chance to represent the BVI, learn from some of the best referees in the Caribbean, and inspire others back home.”

The BVIFA extended congratulations to Chesney and expressed support for her participation in the tournament

British Virgin Islands cricketer Reno Mittleholzer has been named to the Provisional Training Squad for the West Indies Masters, positioning himself for potential selection to the Masters World Cup in November 2025.

Mittleholzer, a standout for the BVI CA Royal Knights, has steadily built a reputation in the Masters cricket circuit. Last November, he played a pivotal role during the Barbados Regional Masters Tournament, helping lead the Royals Team to victory in the high-profile competition.

His success continued in the recently concluded USVI President’s Cup Tournament, held in St. Thomas, where he represented the British Virgin Islands in securing the championship title. The British Virgin Islands Cricket Association (BVICA) has unveiled its squad for the upcoming USVI President’s Cup Cricket Tournament in St. Thomas, USVI. The team will be led by Captain Imran Smith of Falcons CC, with Reno Mettelholzer of Royal Knights CC serving as Vice Captain.

The full squad includes Imran Smith (Captain), Reno Mettelholzer (Vice Captain), Joel Williams, Julian St. Clair, Collis Frazer, DonPaul Chrisnanand, Richard Francis, Shelan Isidore, Johann Lezana, Ameri Hinds, Vaden Walker, Juenick Mingo, and Jerome Morris. Elvis Richards has been appointed as Team Manager.

In an interview with BVICA Public Relations Officer Alison Scatliffe, Captain Imran Smith expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to lead the team. “I appreciate the fact that they entrusted me with the leadership role. It’s a pleasure representing the BVI and leading a bunch of talented guys,” Smith said.

On the team’s preparation, Smith shared that players have been training with their respective clubs and began focused collective sessions two weeks before the tournament. The training has centered around strategic play and a solid understanding of the basic rules to ensure a cohesive team performance.

When discussing his approach to leadership, Smith stressed the importance of balancing tactical strategies with motivation, while fostering a strong team bond and adaptability in various game situations.

Regarding the competition, Smith acknowledged a level of familiarity with some players from St. Thomas through local competitions. However, he cautioned against underestimating any team. “I know the BVI team has a very good chance of becoming winners. We just have to go out there and put what we practiced into play,” he remarked confidently.

Smith also addressed fans who would be unable to attend the matches, encouraging them to support the team in any way possible, and expressed optimism about the future of cricket in the BVI.

As the Paris 2024 Olympic athletics Games commence, all eyes are on the Stade de France for the men’s 100-meter heats set to begin on Saturday morning. Among the star-studded lineup, one name stands out from the British Virgin Islands: Rikkoi Brathwaite. With a personal best of 10.03 seconds this year, Brathwaite aims to cement his place among the world’s fastest men.

Brathwaite’s journey to the Olympics has been one of  perseverance. Representing a small territory in the Caribbean, he has consistently proven himself on the track, earning his spot alongside the greatest 100m record holders. The question on everyone’s mind is whether Brathwaite will be the one to come from behind and make history.

The competition is fierce. Team USA’s superstar Noah Lyles, the reigning world champion, is expected to dominate the track. Lyles, 27, has already made a name for himself with gold medals in the 200-meter sprint and 4×100-meter relay at the 2019 World Championships, and a repeat victory in the 200 meters at the 2022 World Championships. Lyles’ performance at the 2023 World Championships, where he completed the sprint treble with victories in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 4×100-meter relay events, has established him as the man to beat.

Lyles’ ambition doesn’t stop there. In Paris, he aims for an unprecedented quadruple by adding the 4x400m relay to his list of events. Alongside Lyles, Fred Kerley, the world champion in 2022 and silver medallist in the Tokyo Games, is also in top form, making the American contingent a formidable force.

But the Americans are not the only ones vying for the title. Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson, a 22-year-old sensation, clocked the year’s best performance with a time of 9.77 seconds in June. His compatriot, Oblique Seville, has also proven his mettle by defeating Lyles earlier this year.

The competition extends beyond the Americas. Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, only 21, became the first African to medal in the 100 meters at last year’s World Championships in Budapest, where he took silver. Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala, the African record-holder with a time of 9.77 seconds, also poses a significant threat. Omanyala, licensed in Miramas, France, adds a local flavor to the international mix.

Italian sprinter Marcell Jacobs, the defending Olympic champion, is back in form after two injury-plagued seasons. Crowned European champion in June, Jacobs is determined to retain his title.

Despite the fierce competition, Brathwaite remains undeterred. As the heats progress, the world will watch closely to see if Brathwaite can defy the odds and emerge as a new force in the 100 meters.

In a race historically dominated by legends like Usain Bolt, the quest for the next undisputed king of the 100 meters continues. Will Rikkoi Brathwaite rise to the occasion and etch his name in Olympic history? Only time will tell as the athletes take their marks and the starter’s gun fires, signaling the start of a thrilling race to glory.

Rikkoi Brathwaite and Beyonce Defreitas are set to represent the British Virgin Islands (BVI) at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow.

Brathwaite is scheduled to compete in the 60m prelims on March 1st at 8:10 am local time, with potential advancement to the semis at 2:45 pm and the finals at 4:45 pm on the same day. In 2022, Brathwaite ran 6.66 seconds in the 60m prelims, advancing to the semis but withdrew as a precaution due to discomfort. In the 2024 track season, Brathwaite has already run 6.65 seconds, with a personal best of 6.52 seconds on March 12, 2022.

Defreitas will compete on March 2nd in the same event, with the prelims at 6:20 am, semis at 2:45 pm, and finals at 4:45 pm. Her season’s best is 7.37 seconds, achieved two weeks ago. Defreitas’s personal best in the 60m is 7.34 seconds, dated February 24, 2023, during her collegiate years at UCF. This will be Defreitas’s first World Athletics Indoor Championships, having represented Team BVI as the only female athlete at the World Athletics Outdoor Championships in Oregon in 2022.

Team BVI secured its only World Athletics Indoor Championships medal in 2008 when Tahesia Harrigian-Scott won bronze in the 60m sprint in Valencia, Spain. Kyron McMaster, OBE, secured BVI’s only World Athletics Outdoor Championship medal in 2023, winning silver in the 400m hurdles in Budapest.

World Athletics certified senior coach Mr. Ralston Henry will perform coaching and management duties during the Championships. The team is set to depart for Glasgow on February 27th. Updates on the event will be provided on the official site and various platforms.
