The Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports said Thursday that all public schools remain open after a letter circulated on social media falsely claiming that schools were closed due to inclement weather.

According to the ministry, the Department of Disaster Management has not issued any advisory to close schools, and no such communication was authorized. Officials condemned the falsification and circulation of what appeared to be an official document, calling it misleading and disruptive.

“We ask parents, students, and the general public to disregard this false notice and to be guided only by official statements issued directly from the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports and posted on the Government of the Virgin Islands’ official platforms, as well as shared via local radio stations,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry confirmed that all schools remain open on Thursday, Sept. 18. Officials noted that unsettled weather is forecast in the territory and urged residents to exercise caution, stay alert to official updates, and take necessary safety measures.

The ministry thanked the public for its cooperation and reminded residents to verify the source of information before sharing it.

– A $25,000 prize and a Sports Illustrated 3BRAND feature are up for grabs

At just 10 years old, Alexandre Wilson is already rewriting what it means to be a young athlete from the Caribbean. The 2024 BVI Under-9 MVP, karate standout, and competitive chess player has taken his talents global—this summer, earning MVP and Best Shooter accolades at elite soccer camps in the United Kingdom.

Now, he’s aiming even higher—as a nominee in the 2025 Youth Athlete of the Year competition, a national bracket-style contest presented by Russell Wilson’s Why Not You Foundation, Colossal, 3BRAND, and Sports Illustrated.

Currently in the UK attending high-level summer camps, Alexandre has already stood out among campers, racking up awards for Most Valuable Player and Best Shooter — a reflection of his relentless drive and discipline.

“I just want to keep improving,” he said in a recent telephone interview with JTV. “Whether I’m in Tortola, the US or UK, I want to give my best every place I show up.”

That drive has defined Alexandre’s journey. At home in the BVI, he dominated last season’s youth soccer league, playing nearly every position and leading an underdog team to the finals of the BDO U-9 Tournament. His leadership and heart on the pitch earned him the league’s MVP title—one of the proudest moments of his budding career.

Youth Athlete of the Year

But Alexandre isn’t just an athlete—he’s a student of discipline. A 1st Kyu brown belt in karate under the Purple Dragon system, he’s one rank away from black, and credits martial arts for sharpening his focus and teaching him humility.

“Karate helps me stay grounded. It’s not just about strength—it’s about respect, teamwork, and discipline,” he said. “I’ve actually been demoted twice because, at times, I stopped treating it as a lifestyle and became just a routine student. But it humbled me and taught me valuable lessons I’ll never forget.”

He laughed, a little embarrassed. “It was tough—but worth it.”

He also plays chess competitively—another arena where his strategic thinking and patience shine through.

“Chess teaches me to slow down and think. I use that when I play sports too.”

Alexandre draws deep inspiration from his older brother, Stephan Deleon, a standout in basketball, soccer and karate who blazed the trail he now follows.

“Stephan did everything well, and I’ve always wanted to be like him,” Alexandre said. “He inspires me to train harder, to focus, and to go after what I want.”

He chuckled, then added with a grin, “And secretly, I want to surpass his records.”  The laugh lingered—but he clearly meant it.

Now, through the Youth Athlete of the Year competition, Alexandre’s story has the potential to reach a global audience. The initiative, which awards a $25,000 grand prize and a feature in Sports Illustrated’s 3BRAND campaign, is designed to spotlight youth who embody excellence on and off the field.

Voting is now live at AthleteOfTheYear.org, where supporters can cast one vote per day as athletes move through bracket-style rounds toward the finals.

The Government of the Virgin Islands has invited tenders for the provision of insurance coverage for the Ralph T. O’Neal Administration Complex, located at 33 Administration Drive, Wickham’s Cay 1, Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands. The required coverage includes Contractor’s All Risk, Public Liability, and Fire and Extended Perils, which encompasses storm and earthquake protection.

The Ministry of Communications and Works, acting on behalf of the government, seeks proposals from locally based insurance companies to provide these services. Prospective tenderers must meet specific criteria, including holding a valid licence to operate as an insurance company or agent in the British Virgin Islands and demonstrating compliance with tax, duty, and social security obligations.

Interested parties must submit a completed Form of Tender, a financial proposal, and proof of good standing with relevant governmental agencies. Additional documentation outlined in the tender instructions must also be provided. Failure to submit the required documentation will render a bid non-responsive.

Tender documents can be requested via email at procurement@gov.vg with the subject title “Insurance Coverage for the Ralph T. O’Neal Administration Complex.” Applicants are responsible for ensuring receipt of documents, as the government’s procurement mailbox does not provide automatic confirmations.

A virtual pre-tender meeting is scheduled for Thursday, 13th March, at 10:00 a.m. local time. Access credentials for the meeting will be provided to all prospective tenderers beforehand.

Tenders must be submitted in one original copy, three additional copies, and a flash drive containing all documents. The original tender should be placed in a sealed envelope marked “ORIGINAL,” while additional copies should be placed in a separate sealed envelope marked “COPIES.” These envelopes must then be placed in an outer envelope labelled “Tender for Insurance Coverage for the Ralph T. O’Neal Administration Complex” and addressed to the Chairman of the Central Tenders Board, Ministry of Finance, Procurement Unit, RFG Place 2nd Floor, Road Town, Tortola VG1110, British Virgin Islands.

The submission deadline is 10:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday, 1st April. Late submissions will not be accepted. The tenders will be opened at 11:45 a.m. on the same day at the Procurement Unit, Ministry of Finance, RFG Building, Road Town, and tenderers may witness the process via Webex.

The Government of the Virgin Islands reserves the right to reject any or all tenders and will not be responsible for any costs incurred by applicants in the preparation of their proposals.

The Lanzarote Calero Sailing Team completed its participation in the 44Cup Nanny Cay on a strong note, with all races finished under ideal conditions, including 15-18 knot winds and clear skies. The team’s performance showcased marked progress as they competed in a high-level fleet, demonstrating their growing capabilities within the class.

Throughout the day, the team made strategic adjustments to adapt to the changing conditions. Starting with the J3 jib for the first few races, they switched to the J2 jib for later races, maintaining consistent performance. Particularly noteworthy were their starts and the first windward mark roundings, where the team matched up well against the top contenders in the field. Although Charisma and Aleph Racing battled it out for the title, newer teams like GeMera and Lanzarote Calero Sailing Team used the final race to refine their coordination and continue gaining experience.

Looking ahead, the Lanzarote Calero Sailing Team is now focused on the next stop of the 44Cup circuit in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, scheduled for May 15-18, 2025. With key learnings from Nanny Cay, the team is eager to make further strides, especially with the anticipation of racing with their own boat in Porto Cervo.

“We’ve completed a very demanding event, facing some of the world’s best crews. While the results don’t yet reflect our full potential, we leave with invaluable experience and the certainty that with our own boat at the next event, we will be able to compete under better conditions,” said tactician Alfredo González.

As the 44Cup continues to grow, the Lanzarote Calero Sailing Team remains committed to using the competition as a platform for talent development, combining experienced sailors with promising young prospects. With their new boat designed specifically to meet their needs, the team aims to close the gap and emerge as a stronger contender in future events, including the overall standings.

Agriculture and Fisheries Month will be observed this year from March 8 to 29, with a series of activities designed to highlight the ingenuity and resilience of local sectors.

The month-long celebration will include exhibitions, markets, and a panel discussion focused on food security, sustainability, and technological advancements in agriculture and fisheries.

The events aim to provide a platform for local farmers, fishermen, and experts to share their knowledge, showcase their products, and discuss strategies for building a more sustainable future.

Junior Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, Dr. Karl Dawson, stressed the importance of the month in recognising the work of local farmers, fishers, and communities. He noted that the Territory faces challenges due to limited land and a vast ocean, and stressed the need for innovative, sustainable practices.

“As we face the challenges of limited land and vast ocean, we must continue to embrace innovative, sustainable practices,” Dr. Dawson said. “Despite the limited land space, we are working to make more land available for farming, given the vital role agriculture plays in our economy.”

Dr. Dawson also mentioned that the Department of Agriculture will support training initiatives focused on food production methods that are productive but require minimal land use.

Theodore James, Director of Agriculture and Fisheries, explained that this year’s theme, “Limited Land, Vast Ocean: Reimagining Food Production Through Ingenuity,” invites the community to explore new and sustainable approaches to food production.

“This theme highlights how the Territory adapts to the challenges of limited land and an expansive ocean,” Mr. James said. “By reimagining food production and embracing new approaches, we can create sustainable systems that preserve our natural resources, ensuring long-term food security and economic growth for the Virgin Islands.”

The month’s activities will kick off with an exhibition and market in Tortola at Paraquita Bay on March 8 and 9, aimed at engaging the public in discussions about sustainable food practices. Other events include the AgriFish Dialogue and a panel discussion addressing innovative solutions and emerging trends in the agriculture and fisheries sectors.

Exhibitions will also take place on Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke, providing local farmers, fishers, and other stakeholders an opportunity to connect with consumers, showcase their work, and demonstrate how ingenuity is shaping the future of food production in the Virgin Islands.

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries remains committed to promoting sustainable practices throughout the Territory, fostering a brighter future for both agriculture and fisheries.
