The Virgin Islands witnessed an evening of inspiration and cultural pride at the inaugural Toast Gala, hosted by the creative platform Kickin It.

The event, which brought together the islands’ most celebrated artists and innovators, showcased the thriving creative community within the territory.

The highlight of the night was a heartfelt and candid speech delivered by Trailblazer honoree Adam O, a prominent figure in the Virgin Islands music scene.

Adam O, renowned for his electrifying fusion of soca, kompa, zouk, and R&B, has captivated audiences worldwide. As he accepted his award, he spoke passionately about the challenges faced by Virgin Islands creatives, touching on the often-overlooked need for support. “Being from the Virgin Islands, being a creative from the Virgin Islands, being anything—whether it’s music, art, or anything else—we don’t really get the support like a doctor, a lawyer, or a basketball player. That’s just real,” Adam O remarked. “People don’t always understand what we do, and it really boils down to one word: support. That’s all we really need.”

With a touch of humor, Adam O reminisced about his roots, telling the audience, “You know, I grew up in Virgin Gorda. I am an O’Neal boy. So this ain’t just a Crucian coming over here to get an award. I have my belonger’s card.” His words resonated deeply with the crowd, who shared in his pride and connection to the islands.

Expressing his profound gratitude to Kickin It and its founder, Kyra, Adam O revealed that this award was particularly meaningful to him. “This is the first award I’ve received as an artist, and it means more than any other recognition I’ve ever been given. You don’t know how much this means to me. I don’t think you know what it is you did tonight,” he said, his voice filled with emotion.

The Toast Gala is a reflection of Kickin It’s mission to elevate and empower Virgin Islands creatives. In addition to Adam O, the evening honored other notable talents, including visual artist Jannet Prosper and creative director and stylist Travie Rozae. By shining a spotlight on these homegrown artists, Kickin It aims to inspire and nurture the next generation of Virgin Islands talent, ensuring that their contributions to culture and community continue to thrive.

As the night came to a close, the inaugural Toast Gala was more than just an awards ceremony—it was a celebration of the vibrant spirit and undeniable talent that defines the Virgin Islands. The event marked the beginning of what promises to be a lasting legacy of support and recognition for the territory’s creative community.

The Jamaican track and field community is grappling with the news that sprinting legends Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson will not participate in the 4x100m relay heats at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Shericka Jackson has been contending with an injury sustained during a competition in Hungary last month. Despite intensive rehabilitation efforts, it became evident that competing could exacerbate the injury.

Bruce James, president of MVP Track Club, provided insight into the decision. “Her participation in the relays was always in doubt. The best decision for Jamaica is to keep her out; the last thing we need is Shericka running the anchor leg and not being able to finish,” James told TVJ, as reported by the Jamaican Gleaner.

Jackson had already pulled out of the 100m and 200m events, making her withdrawal from the relays a tough but necessary choice. “During the 200m heats, she felt increased pain with every sprint. Prioritising her health is crucial,” added James.

Simultaneously, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, another cornerstone of Jamaican sprinting, confirmed she would not be competing in the relay heats. Ian Kelly, Chef de Mission for Jamaica’s Olympic team, discussed the adjustments being made.

“With Shelly-Ann and Shericka out, we’ve brought in Kemba [Nelson] and have other capable athletes ready to step in,” Kelly noted. He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to perform despite the absence of the two stars. “We are committed to ensuring that the experience and strength these athletes bring to the team are well represented.”

Jamaica now faces the challenge of moving forward without two of its most celebrated sprinters, but the team remains optimistic about their chances in the relay events.

Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Islands has emerged as a standout athlete in the preliminary heats of the 400m hurdles at the Paris Olympics, joining Jamaica’s national champion Malik James-King, Roshawn Clarke, and Jaheel Hyde in advancing to the semi-final round.

McMaster booked his spot with a time of 49.24 seconds this morning, August 5, securing third place in his heat. This marks a strong showing for Caribbean athletes in this event, as they continue to make waves on the global stage.

James-King, who posted a personal best of 47.42 to win the Jamaican national championships in June, delivered a smooth performance in the heats. He clocked 48.21 to comfortably win the last of five heats, securing his place as an automatic qualifier. Clarke, who finished second to James-King at the Jamaican trial, won Heat Four in a time of 48.17, ensuring his advancement to the semi-finals.

Hyde, competing in the opening heat against gold medal favourite Rai Benjamin, crossed the finish line in second place with a time of 49.08. Benjamin took the heat in an effortless 48.82. McMaster followed closely, securing third place in 49.24 to move on to the next round. “The main objective was to secure the automatic qualification, so once I positioned myself well in the first 250 metres, I just maintained my pace and eased to the finish. I focused on not aggravating anything and keeping my composure,” McMaster told the BVI Olympic Committee. He will compete in the semi-finals at 1:35 p.m. on Wednesday, 7 August.

Among the other medal favourites, Norway’s Karsten Warholm emerged as the fastest qualifier for the semi-finals, winning Heat Two in 47.57. Frenchman Clement Docus achieved a lifetime best of 47.69 to take second place, while Abderrahman Samba of Qatar finished third in 48.85. In another heat, Estonia’s Rasmus Magi led the pack with a winning time of 48.62, followed by the USA’s CJ Allen, who clocked 48.64. Brazil’s Alison dos Santos, another strong contender for a medal, secured his semi-final spot with a time of 48.85.

Defending champion Karsten Warholm safely advanced to the semi-finals of the men’s Olympic 400m hurdles after winning his heat at the Stade de France on Monday. Warholm, who set the world record when winning gold at the Covid-delayed Tokyo Games, clocked 47.57 in scorching early morning weather in Paris. Also progressing with ease were the Norwegian’s main rivals for gold: American Rai Benjamin and Brazilian Alison Dos Santos. Benjamin eased up a full 30 metres from the line to win the opening heat in 48.82 ahead of Jamaican Jaheel Hyde and Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Islands. Dos Santos was a comfortable third behind heat winner Rasmus Magi of Estonia and American CJ Allen.

The semi-finals are scheduled for 17:35 GMT on Wednesday, with the final slated for 19:45 on Friday.

When the gun went, I think I got out first, and as the race progressed, I had a lot of cramps everywhere at that point but still pursued the race and finished with a 10.15. It isn’t how I wanted to end the season, but it is what it is.”
