The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has raised the forecast chances for a tropical wave in the Atlantic to evolve into the season’s next tropical depression or storm. The system, which has been gathering strength since Thursday, is now positioned in the central tropical Atlantic, roughly midway between the Cape Verde Islands and the Lesser Antilles.

As of 8 a.m. on Saturday, the tropical wave, now officially named Potential Tropical Cyclone Five, was projected to become the third hurricane of the 2024 season. The NHC predicts that the system will develop into a tropical depression by early Monday morning and potentially intensify into Tropical Storm Ernesto shortly thereafter.

Currently moving west-northwest at 21 mph, Potential Tropical Cyclone Five is located approximately 950 miles southeast of Antigua. It has sustained winds of 30 mph and a central pressure of 1010 millibars. The system’s expansive stretch of showers and thunderstorms has grown more organized, prompting a series of tropical storm watches across the Caribbean.

In response to the impending threat, several governments across the Caribbean have issued Tropical Storm Watches, signaling the potential for tropical storm conditions within 48 hours. The affected areas include Guadeloupe, St. Martin, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Antigua, Barbuda, Anguilla, Saba, St. Eustatius, and Sint Maarten.

The Tropical Storm Watches highlight the growing concern for residents in these areas, who are advised to stay vigilant as the system advances. Interests in the Leeward Islands, British and U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico are also encouraged to monitor the storm’s progress closely, with additional watches potentially being issued tonight or early Monday.

As Potential Tropical Cyclone Five continues on its west-northwest trajectory, it is poised to become Tropical Storm Ernesto in the coming days.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Financial Services, Labour, and Trade, Honourable Lorna Smith, OBE, confirmed that the Territory’s minimum wage minimum wage will rise to $8.50 per hour effective 30 November 2024..

Honourable Smith explained that this wage adjustment is a key component of a broader, multi-faceted economic strategy. “This decision reflects our commitment to fostering a robust economy that benefits all stakeholders,” Smith stated. “By implementing this balanced approach, we aim to enhance worker welfare while fortifying our businesses for long-term sustainability.”

The forthcoming increase is part of a comprehensive plan that includes regular wage reviews, targeted support for small businesses, and increased investments in workforce development. The Minimum Wage Review report, which underpinned this decision, will be laid before the House of Assembly shortly and will subsequently be made available to the public for further insights into the rationale and details of the wage increase.

The adjustment follows a thorough review conducted by the Minimum Wage Advisory Committee, which evaluated policy documents, economic data, and labour force statistics. The committee engaged in extensive consultations, including surveys, media interviews, and focus groups, to gather diverse perspectives from stakeholders such as the BVI Chamber of Commerce, business owners, and employees.

Honourable Smith expressed her gratitude to the committee members and the Ministry of Financial Services, Labour, and Trade staff for their dedicated efforts in this process. “I extend my heartfelt appreciation to everyone who contributed to this important review,” she said.

The Government encourages both businesses and workers to embrace this positive change as a step towards creating a fairer, more inclusive, and sustainable economic environment for the Virgin Islands.

The BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) has temporarily suspended all elective surgeries at the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital, with only emergency procedures being accommodated due to concerns regarding the air conditioning (AC) system.

The hospital is currently grappling with a temperature control issue stemming from a software malfunction in the AC chilling unit, causing erratic cooling cycles. The BVIHSA has reassured the community of its efforts to address this technical challenge and requests patience during the resolution process.

Efforts are underway to rectify the situation, with the engagement of the system manufacturer and the procurement of necessary parts and software. Upon their arrival in the territory, a technician from the manufacturer will oversee the installation process.

As a consequence of these AC-related complications, adjustments to hospital services are inevitable to ensure the comfort and well-being of patients, visitors, and staff.  Additionally, modifications to pharmacy outpatient services have been implemented, requiring medication orders to be submitted via WhatsApp or refill requests via phone for next-day pick-up between specified hours.

The BVIHSA extends its apologies for any inconvenience caused by these service alterations and assures the public of its commitment to swiftly resolve the issue. Despite these challenges, the authority remains dedicated to delivering high-quality healthcare services to all residents of the British Virgin Islands, expressing gratitude for the community’s understanding and cooperation during this period of adjustment.
