The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) successfully seized three firearms and a substantial cache of ammunition during a targeted operation on Saturday, August 24.

The operation, which forms part of the RVIPF’s ongoing efforts to combat rising gun violence in the territory, involved intelligence-led stop-and-search checks, targeted patrols, and searches across designated hotspots. Officers, while conducting a search in the Purcell Estate area, encountered a male suspect known to be on bail with strict nightly curfew conditions. The suspect attempted to flee on foot but was swiftly apprehended by officers on the scene.

A thorough search of the suspect’s possessions, as well as the area where he was initially spotted, resulted in the discovery of three firearms, including two high-powered assault rifles, and a large quantity of assorted ammunition. The RVIPF is currently investigating the origins of these weapons and whether they are connected to other criminal activities on the island.

Acting Commissioner of Police Jacqueline Vanterpool hailed the operation as a pivotal step in the RVIPF’s ongoing battle to dismantle a criminal gang believed to be responsible for multiple firearm-related offenses in recent weeks. “This operation marks a significant achievement in our efforts to protect the community and bring those who threaten our safety to justice,” said Vanterpool.

She further commended the officers involved for their dedication and bravery, stating, “The RVIPF is committed to investigating and apprehending criminal offenders who continue to flout the law and create mayhem in the community.”

Acting Commissioner Vanterpool also called on the public to support law enforcement efforts by providing any information related to criminal activities. “We encourage anyone with knowledge of these or any other crimes to come forward. Your cooperation is crucial to the success of our ongoing operations,” she urged.

The RVIPF has provided multiple avenues for confidential reporting, including the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-8477 (TIPS) and the RVIPF Intelligence Department at 368-9339, ensuring that all information shared will be handled with the utmost confidentiality.

Tropical Storm Ernesto has left a trail of disruptions across the British Virgin Islands, with Digicel’s mobile and fibre networks among those impacted. The telecommunications provider has reported service interruptions in several areas due to power outages and significant damage to a major fibre cable.

In a statement released earlier today, Digicel confirmed that efforts are underway to restore full service as quickly as possible. However, the extent of the damage, particularly in East End and Virgin Gorda, means that some customers may experience prolonged outages.

“Our teams are working around the clock to get everything back online,” said a Digicel spokesperson. “We understand how crucial these services are to our customers, and we appreciate your patience as we address these issues.”

Affected areas for fibre (Digicel+) services on Tortola include Josiah’s Bay, East End, Lamberts/Balsam Ghut, Hodges Creek, Paraquita Bay, East End, Greenland, Parham Town, and Beef Island. On Virgin Gorda, repair work is currently focused on fixing the fibre network in VG.

For mobile services, customers in Frenchman’s Cay, Parham Town, Long Trench, Luck Hill, parts of Cane Garden and Brewers Bay, Sage Mountain, Towers, Fort Recovery, and Greenland on Tortola, as well as Coal Mine and Nail Bay on Virgin Gorda, are experiencing disruptions.

Digicel has urged customers experiencing issues to report faults by dialing #100. The company has assured the public that repair crews are on standby and will be dispatched to assist as soon as possible.

As the BVI continues to recover from the impact of Tropical Storm Ernesto, Digicel remains committed to restoring full connectivity for all its customers. The company has expressed its gratitude for the community’s understanding and support during this challenging time.

Adacia Adonis is making waves as she reigns over the 70th Emancipation Festival Celebrations as Miss British Virgin Islands 2024.

Reflecting on her achievement, Adacia expressed a deep sense of pride. “Not only has my hard work and dedication paid off, but I feel honoured to be a representative of the Virgin Islands. I still feel a little in awe; however, I’m mostly overjoyed.”

Her inspiration to enter the pageant stemmed from a sense of urgency. “Honestly, one of the driving factors was my age! With the pageant having an age limit of 27, I didn’t want to live a life of regret. This pageant allows one to showcase talent and create positive change in the community. My biggest supporter has been my sister, Kesha Adonis, who encouraged me to enter this year, and I couldn’t have done it without her.”

The journey to the crown wasn’t without its challenges. “I faced immense pressure to perform well and meet societal expectations,” Adacia recalled. “Dealing with criticism from peers was emotionally taxing, but I learned to pray for peace of mind before each practice. I also limited my social media use to protect my mental state.”

Adacia is passionate about raising awareness for endometriosis, a cause close to her heart. “My platform, ‘From Pain to Purpose: Raising Endometriosis Awareness in Our Community,’ aims to advocate for women suffering in silence,” she explained. “I plan to partner with organisations like W.I.N to provide resources and educate young girls about prevention.”

Her crowning moment remains unforgettable. “I am a firm believer in prayer and manifesting my future, but nothing prepared me for the emotions I felt being crowned,” she said. “The crown is heavy, but it symbolises carrying the weight of the people of the Virgin Islands.”

In addition to the title, Adacia won awards for Best Swimsuit, Best Evening Wear, and Best Intellect. “Preparing for the swimsuit category required intense training and discipline,” she noted. “I also collaborated with renowned designer Carlos Alberto for the evening wear, ensuring that every detail was perfect.”

As she balances her responsibilities as queen with personal and professional life, Adacia emphasises the importance of setting boundaries. “It’s vital to maintain healthy relationships while being an active queen,” she stated.

Her advice for next year’s contestants? “Keep God and supportive people close. Without prayer and encouragement, it’s easy to become discouraged.”

With a dazzling smile and a heart full of passion, Adacia is eager to represent her beloved islands both regionally and internationally.

She recently represented the BVI at the Miss Jaycees Queen Show in Antigua, an experience she found valuable despite not placing. “I faced technical issues, and there were a few challenges, but I handled them with poise and class. Challenges are inevitable, but it’s how we rise above them that defines us. This was an experience like no other,” she shared. “I enjoyed meeting other delegates and gaining exposure to the international pageant scene.”

As the first Miss BVI International, Adacia understands the significance of her role. “I plan to showcase the BVI as the sailing capital of the Caribbean, celebrating our vibrant culture through traditional attire, music, and dance,” she affirmed.

Beyond her reign, Adacia aspires to become a solicitor and eventually open a law firm with her sister. “I want to be a voice for other women and advocate for causes close to my heart,” she said.

Adacia Adonis is ready to embark on her journey as Miss British Virgin Islands 2024, embodying the spirit of her community while inspiring future generations of young women to follow in her footsteps.

At just 18 years old, Adaejah Hodge has already made a name for herself on the international stage. Representing the British Virgin Islands, she is the youngest athlete to compete in the women’s 200 metres at this year’s Paris Olympics. Driven by a passion for running that began at age five, Hodge is focused, committed, and ready to leave her mark on the world’s biggest athletic stage.

Hodge’s journey to the Olympics is a story of dreams realised through relentless hard work. “I was extremely relieved when I found out I qualified for the Olympics because it has been a dream of mine since a very young age,” she shared in an exclusive interview. Her determination was evident from an early age when she broke a 26-year-old Junior Olympic 200m record at just 12 years old.

Reflecting on her inspiration, Hodge credits her mother for sparking her interest in track and field. “My mum inspired me to start running track because I would always see her medals and trophies. I wanted to earn trophies and medals as well. My mum continues to influence my athletic career by allowing me to be myself and supporting me no matter what,” she said.

Hodge’s daily training regimen is rigorous and carefully tailored to her needs. “No training day is the same, but I generally start with the same warm-up and go through well-thought-out exercises and drills that cater specifically to me and help me perfect my craft,” she explained. Balancing her training with personal and educational commitments requires exceptional time management skills. “I balance my training schedule with my personal and educational life by having great time management, allowing myself to be a regular college student, and finding hobbies outside of track and field,” she added.

Despite her youth, Hodge has faced significant challenges. An injury earlier this year tested her resolve. “My biggest challenge in this journey was my injury because it shifted my plans tremendously. I got over this challenge by trusting in God and also making sure I surrounded myself with the right individuals to uplift me,” she said. The support from her community has also been a source of inspiration. “Although I don’t reside in the BVI, the community has shown so much love and support which has inspired me to continue to strive for greatness,” she noted.

Hodge draws inspiration from track and field star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, whom she admires for her humility and faith. Her most memorable race to date was running a 22.33 indoor, an achievement that she describes as “so unpredictable and shocking.”

As she prepares for her Olympic debut, Hodge’s main goal is to execute her races with confidence and comfort. Music plays a key role in keeping her focused and motivated during competitions and training. To handle the pressure, she relies on her support team and journals to express her thoughts.

Hodge’s Olympic journey represents more than personal achievement; it symbolises hope and opportunity for the younger generation in the BVI. “I believe that being able to compete on an international stage at such a young age has brought publicity to the BVI and created many opportunities for the younger generations,” she said.

Looking ahead, Hodge plans to savour her college experience post-Olympics and compete in the World U20 Championships in Peru. Her approach remains rooted in enjoying the sport she loves. “I plan to go out there and enjoy myself while doing what I love,” she said.

Adaejah Hodge’s Olympic journey exemplifies hard work, dedication, and discipline, highlighting that greatness knows no age when fuelled by determination. As she steps onto the track in Paris, all eyes will be on this young prodigy, ready to witness her sprint towards Olympic glory.
