The Governor’s Office in the British Virgin Islands has opened applications for the Future Fund, a new initiative aimed at fostering youth empowerment and good governance across the territory. Backed by $50,000 from the UK government, the program offers grants of up to $10,000 for projects that promote sustainable development and civic engagement.

The Future Fund invites applications from registered Virgin Islands non-profit organisations, schools, community groups, or partnerships looking to support local youth and improve governance practices. The program targets initiatives that help young people, aged 13 to 21, develop valuable skills and explore potential careers in sectors like tourism, agriculture, sports, and environmental management. It also aims to foster community engagement, transparency, and political accountability through activities such as citizen journalism, media code of conduct development, and projects that highlight how public funds are utilised.

Governor Daniel Pruce expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, saying, “I’m proud to announce this important investment in the future growth of the Virgin Islands. As I outlined in my swearing-in speech, I am committed to supporting efforts to build a better future for the youth of the Virgin Islands. I encourage all those who are eligible to apply to please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.”

The initiative is part of a broader effort to advance the Virgin Islands’ National Sustainable Development Plan, which aims to empower islanders for a sustainable future in an inclusive and vibrant society.

Applications must be submitted to andrea.blumire2@fcdo.gov.uk by September 20, 2024. A review committee, consisting of three representatives from the Governor’s Office and the BVI government, will evaluate the proposals based on set criteria. Successful applicants will be announced on October 25, 2024, and projects must be completed by March 31, 2025.

With the clock ticking, eligible organisations and groups are encouraged to act quickly to secure funding for initiatives that can make a meaningful difference in the Virgin Islands community.

The Inland Revenue Department of the Virgin Islands is reminding property owners that the 2024 Property Tax is due between September 1 and November 30. This notice comes as the department prepares to enforce the Property Tax Ordinance, Cap 207 (as amended), ensuring that all property owners comply with their tax obligations for the year.

The official Property Tax list, which details proprietors’ names, property descriptions and amounts due, has been made publicly accessible across the Territory. Residents can review the list at various public buildings, including the Inland Revenue Department offices on Tortola and Virgin Gorda, as well as District Offices on Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. For added convenience, the list is also available online at the government’s official website.

Property owners who disagree with the tax assessments on their properties have an opportunity to challenge these assessments. On Monday, September 2, at 10 a.m., owners from Tortola, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke and other locations within the BVI can present their objections to the Magistrate at the Magistrate’s Court, located in the old CTL building in Pasea. Property owners on Virgin Gorda can raise their concerns on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the Magistrate’s Court in the Valley, Virgin Gorda.

The Inland Revenue Department strongly encourages property owners to settle their 2024 Property Tax promptly to avoid incurring interest charges, which are set at twenty percent. Additionally, property owners with outstanding taxes are advised to either pay their dues or arrange a payment plan with the department. It is also important to note that legal transactions related to “Stamp Duty” will not be processed unless all taxes associated with the property are paid in full.

For further information or assistance, property owners can contact the Inland Revenue Department at (284) 468-2155.

The newly formed LIAT 2020 launched its inaugural flight to Saint Lucia today, August 6, signaling the resurgence of the inter-regional airline following the bankruptcy of its predecessor, LIAT (1974) Ltd, in January this year.

The inaugural flight departed from V.C. Bird International Airport in Antigua at 11:30 a.m., carrying a delegation of dignitaries and media representatives. The launch was preceded by a brief opening ceremony where Prime Minister Gaston A. Browne of Antigua and Barbuda, along with other officials, expressed their pride and optimism for the future of LIAT 2020.

Formed in partnership with Air Peace, a Nigerian private airline established in 2013, LIAT 2020 aims to restore and enhance regional connectivity. The new entity emerges from the shadow of LIAT 1974 Ltd, which had been under administration since July 24, 2020.

LIAT 2020 begins operations with a fleet of seven aircraft, initially offering a limited schedule of three flights per week between Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Lucia, and Barbados. This strategic launch is part of a broader vision to rebuild a reliable inter-island transport network that is vital for the economic and social fabric of the Caribbean.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Air Peace would invest nearly US$65 million into the venture, with the government of Antigua and Barbuda contributing an additional US$20 million.

While LIAT 2020 has yet to schedule flights to the British Virgin Islands (VI), there is growing anticipation that the airline will soon expand its routes to include this key destination. The VI, currently facing challenges with regional airline services, stands to benefit significantly from LIAT 2020’s enhanced connectivity.
