The British Virgin Islands Football Association announced that Assistant Referee Kenesha Chesney will make her regional debut at the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Girls U14 Challenge Series in Trinidad from Aug. 15 to 24.

Chesney, who began her involvement in football by watching local matches, chose officiating over playing. “I’ve always wanted to be part of the game, and refereeing gave me that opportunity,” she said. “It’s about focus, fitness, and making quick decisions under pressure — and I love the challenge.”

Since starting her refereeing career, Chesney has worked to master the Laws of the Game, improve her fitness, and develop the mental resilience required at higher levels. The BVIFA said her dedication has been supported by mentors and fellow referees.

Her selection marks a milestone for women’s officiating in the BVI. “Being chosen for this tournament is an honour,” Chesney said. “It’s a chance to represent the BVI, learn from some of the best referees in the Caribbean, and inspire others back home.”

The BVIFA extended congratulations to Chesney and expressed support for her participation in the tournament

To tackle rising mosquito populations and the associated health risks, officials from the Public Health Unit and the Environmental Health Division have joined forces with local communities to curb mosquito breeding in key areas of the British Virgin Islands.

Chief Environmental Health Officer, Lionel Michael, emphasised the importance of community action in reducing mosquito breeding grounds. “We’re focusing on the community level, particularly in areas with high mosquito indices, to identify and eliminate breeding sites,” Michael said. “Our goal is to work hand-in-hand with residents to mitigate vector-related issues.”

Health officials are targeting communities such as Sea Cow’s Bay, East End, Lower Estate, Huntum’s Ghut, Purcell and Baugher’s Bay, where mosquito breeding has become a pressing issue. The collaboration aims to provide residents with the knowledge and tools needed to manage the ongoing vector problem in their neighborhoods.

National Epidemiologist Harmonie Brewley-Massiah stressed the importance of managing mosquito populations to reduce the risk of vector-borne diseases. “We’re particularly concerned about the spike in Dengue Fever cases as the numbers continue to rise,” she said.

The first community meeting will take place in East End on Saturday, September 28, and Sunday, September 29, at the Francis Lettsome Primary School from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Topics will include mosquito-borne disease prevention, control measures, and the importance of community engagement in managing mosquito populations.

“We encourage the community to partner with us in this effort,” Brewley-Massiah added. “It’s only through full participation that we can reduce the risk of disease and lower mosquito indices.”

The Ministry of Health and Social Development reaffirmed its commitment to managing environmental factors that could negatively impact public health, aiming to ensure that all residents of the BVI can maintain optimal health and well-being.

The tournament, which brings together 23 nations from across the Caribbean, is being held in Trinidad and Tobago from 16 to 25 August.

Following opening match against Dominica, Nature Boys will face Turks and Caicos Islands on Saturday, August 17, US Virgin Islands on Monday, August 19 and Anguilla on Tuesday August 20.

The BVI squad, led by Captain Myles Penn, includes talented players Trevon Stevens, Emery Jones, Carlon Stewart, Kyrique Matthew, Zed Chalwell, Quinn Pascoe, Quacey Cooper, Kerjahni Prevost, Devin Daley, Akhori Sebastian, T’YRique Charles, Sha’Mauri Lennard, Ethan Mohamed, Caedon Fraites, Audony Gangoo, Joel Gilford, James Tucker Davis, Delanie Gordon and Bryson Walters.

The team is supported by a dedicated group of officials: Head Coach Jozette Gregg, Assistant Coach Thomas Albert, Goalkeeper Coach and Kit Manager Morris Mark, Trainer Jeffery Demming, Physiologist Chester James and Team Manager Priya Mohamed.

The CFU, dedicated to the management and development of football in the region, serves as an umbrella platform for 31 football-playing nations in the Caribbean. This year, 23 of these nations are showcasing their young talents in this multi-country football series.

The tournament structure divides the teams into two tiers. Tier 1 includes the top eight teams, while the remaining 15 teams compete in Tier 2. Within Tier 2, the BVI U-14 boys’ team has been placed in Group B, alongside Anguilla, Turks and Caicos, the US Virgin Islands, and Dominica.

The CFU Boy’s U-14 Challenge Series is viewed as a crucial platform for nurturing young talent in the region, with fans calling for greater attention to be paid to the sport, particularly in nations not participating this year.
