Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Islands delivered a standout performance at the Paris Olympics today, August 9, 2024, clocking a season’s best of 47.79 seconds to secure 5th place in the fiercely competitive men’s 400m hurdles.

In a race that had the world on the edge of its seat, Rai Benjamin of the United States dethroned Norway’s Karsten Warholm, the world record holder and defending Olympic champion, by surging to victory with a blistering time of 46.46 seconds, seizing the gold and etching his name in Olympic history.

From the start, Warholm surged ahead, true to his reputation as one of the fastest starters in the sport. Brazil’s Alison dos Santos also began with a blistering pace, quickly closing the stagger and positioning himself as a key contender.

As the athletes rounded the final bend and entered the home stretch, it became clear that this race would be a battle of endurance as much as speed. Warholm, despite his explosive start, began to show signs of fatigue. Benjamin, however, had timed his race to perfection, powering ahead of Warholm in the final meters.

Benjamin crossed the finish line in 46.46 seconds, securing his first Olympic gold and dethroning the reigning champion. Warholm, visibly exhausted, managed to hold on for silver, clocking in at 47.06 seconds. His frustration was palpable as he let out a yell upon crossing the line, knowing his title had slipped away.

Alison dos Santos claimed the bronze medal with a time of 47.26 seconds.

The race also featured strong performances from other competitors. France’s Clément Ducos, fueled by the roaring support of the home crowd, delivered a commendable effort. Abderrahman Samba of Qatar was also in the mix, pushing hard in his quest for a podium finish.

Warholm’s world and Olympic record of 45.94 seconds, set in Tokyo, remains untouched. However, tonight belonged to Rai Benjamin, who proved that even the mightiest champions can be dethroned.

Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo won gold in the men’s 200 meters final on Thursday, August 8, finishing with a time of 19.46 seconds, the fourth-fastest in Olympic history.

Tebogo’s victory overshadowed the struggles of American star Noah Lyles, who crossed the line in third after revealing he was battling COVID-19. Following the race, Lyles was assisted off the track in a wheelchair.

Lyles’ finish for the second consecutive Olympics left fans and competitors in shock. Despite his health struggles, Lyles managed to finish in 19.70 seconds, falling to his back in pain as he grappled with the effects of the virus that had impacted him throughout his Olympic journey.

As Lyles dealt with his medical issues, Kenny Bednarek secured silver with a time of 19.62 seconds.

Lyles’ condition became evident a night earlier when he finished second in a semifinal and headed to the medical tent without speaking to the press. Despite reassurances from his coach that he was fine, it was clear something was wrong as the final unfolded.

As the runners approached the homestretch, Lyles fell behind, unable to summon his finishing kick. What was once a reliable surge in the final stretch transformed into a push for the line, culminating in a collapse onto the purple track, marking a conclusion to his Olympic journey.

The Jamaican track and field community is grappling with the news that sprinting legends Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson will not participate in the 4x100m relay heats at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Shericka Jackson has been contending with an injury sustained during a competition in Hungary last month. Despite intensive rehabilitation efforts, it became evident that competing could exacerbate the injury.

Bruce James, president of MVP Track Club, provided insight into the decision. “Her participation in the relays was always in doubt. The best decision for Jamaica is to keep her out; the last thing we need is Shericka running the anchor leg and not being able to finish,” James told TVJ, as reported by the Jamaican Gleaner.

Jackson had already pulled out of the 100m and 200m events, making her withdrawal from the relays a tough but necessary choice. “During the 200m heats, she felt increased pain with every sprint. Prioritising her health is crucial,” added James.

Simultaneously, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, another cornerstone of Jamaican sprinting, confirmed she would not be competing in the relay heats. Ian Kelly, Chef de Mission for Jamaica’s Olympic team, discussed the adjustments being made.

“With Shelly-Ann and Shericka out, we’ve brought in Kemba [Nelson] and have other capable athletes ready to step in,” Kelly noted. He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to perform despite the absence of the two stars. “We are committed to ensuring that the experience and strength these athletes bring to the team are well represented.”

Jamaica now faces the challenge of moving forward without two of its most celebrated sprinters, but the team remains optimistic about their chances in the relay events.

Kevin Durant has officially become the all-time leading Olympic scorer in USA Basketball history. Durant scored 11 points in Team USA’s 122–87 victory over Brazil in the 2024 Olympic Games semifinals on Tuesday, bringing his career total to 494 points. Durant surpasses Lisa Leslie’s previous record of 488 points, making him the top scorer in both men’s and women’s Olympic basketball.

Leslie, a four-time gold medalist, set her record while competing for Team USA in 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008. Durant, who has already won gold medals in the 2012, 2016, and 2020 Games, is now aiming to match Leslie’s total of four gold medals as he competes in Paris.

Devin Booker, Durant’s Phoenix Suns and Team USA teammate, gave Durant a new nickname after his latest accomplishment in international play. “That’s Captain America status,” Booker told NBC on Monday. “I feel like he has every record, every Olympic record. Now we have to get him his fourth gold.”

Durant was one of six Americans to score in double figures in Tuesday’s game, alongside Booker (18 points), Anthony Edwards (17), Joel Embiid (14), Anthony Davis (13), and LeBron James (12).

Durant, or “Captain America,” and Team USA will next face the Nikola Jokic-led Serbia squad in the Olympic semifinals on Thursday. The Americans previously defeated Serbia 110–84 in the group stage on July 28.

Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Islands has emerged as a standout athlete in the preliminary heats of the 400m hurdles at the Paris Olympics, joining Jamaica’s national champion Malik James-King, Roshawn Clarke, and Jaheel Hyde in advancing to the semi-final round.

McMaster booked his spot with a time of 49.24 seconds this morning, August 5, securing third place in his heat. This marks a strong showing for Caribbean athletes in this event, as they continue to make waves on the global stage.

James-King, who posted a personal best of 47.42 to win the Jamaican national championships in June, delivered a smooth performance in the heats. He clocked 48.21 to comfortably win the last of five heats, securing his place as an automatic qualifier. Clarke, who finished second to James-King at the Jamaican trial, won Heat Four in a time of 48.17, ensuring his advancement to the semi-finals.

Hyde, competing in the opening heat against gold medal favourite Rai Benjamin, crossed the finish line in second place with a time of 49.08. Benjamin took the heat in an effortless 48.82. McMaster followed closely, securing third place in 49.24 to move on to the next round. “The main objective was to secure the automatic qualification, so once I positioned myself well in the first 250 metres, I just maintained my pace and eased to the finish. I focused on not aggravating anything and keeping my composure,” McMaster told the BVI Olympic Committee. He will compete in the semi-finals at 1:35 p.m. on Wednesday, 7 August.

Among the other medal favourites, Norway’s Karsten Warholm emerged as the fastest qualifier for the semi-finals, winning Heat Two in 47.57. Frenchman Clement Docus achieved a lifetime best of 47.69 to take second place, while Abderrahman Samba of Qatar finished third in 48.85. In another heat, Estonia’s Rasmus Magi led the pack with a winning time of 48.62, followed by the USA’s CJ Allen, who clocked 48.64. Brazil’s Alison dos Santos, another strong contender for a medal, secured his semi-final spot with a time of 48.85.

Defending champion Karsten Warholm safely advanced to the semi-finals of the men’s Olympic 400m hurdles after winning his heat at the Stade de France on Monday. Warholm, who set the world record when winning gold at the Covid-delayed Tokyo Games, clocked 47.57 in scorching early morning weather in Paris. Also progressing with ease were the Norwegian’s main rivals for gold: American Rai Benjamin and Brazilian Alison Dos Santos. Benjamin eased up a full 30 metres from the line to win the opening heat in 48.82 ahead of Jamaican Jaheel Hyde and Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Islands. Dos Santos was a comfortable third behind heat winner Rasmus Magi of Estonia and American CJ Allen.

The semi-finals are scheduled for 17:35 GMT on Wednesday, with the final slated for 19:45 on Friday.

Noah Lyles edged out Jamaican sprinter Kishane Thompson to capture his first Olympic gold medal in the men’s 100-meter race with a lifetime best of 9.784 seconds.

Thompson finished just five thousandths of a second behind at 9.789 seconds. The official results were not immediately clear, leaving both athletes in suspense for nearly a minute until the photo finish was confirmed.

When the results were finally displayed on the Stade de France videoboard, Lyles was declared the gold medalist. Thompson secured the silver, while American Fred Kerley earned the bronze, marking his second Olympic medal in the 100m.

Lyles’ victory makes him the first American man to win gold in the 100m since Justin Gatlin at the 2004 Athens Games. After a disappointing seventh-place finish at the U.S. Trials in 2021, Lyles has now established himself as the world’s top 100m runner for the second consecutive year.
